Russian officials have fuelled tensions by claiming that 'NATO is preparing for war with Russia.' This is a clear myth. NATO is a defensive alliance, whose purpose is to protect its member states. NATO does not seek confrontation with Russia. In fact, for almost a quarter of a century, NATO worked to establish a partnership with Russia. NATO announces military exercises well in advance and they're subject to international observation.
