DUCATI MONSTER FAMILY
Presented in 1992 at the Cologne fair, the Monster was an immediate hit, a machine that skilfully combined a few simple technical elements to create not just a bike but, first and foremost, a true design phenomenon. Over the years the Monster has gone on to become a motorcycling icon and now, twenty years later, Ducati offers a full Monster 'family' that has something for every motorcyclist.
A core feature of the Monster family is the high-capacity steel fuel tank that enhances its powerful character. Emphasized by its thin flanks and the compact front headlight, the outline of the Monster resembles that of a charging bull. A clean, minimalist handlebar zone underscores the bike's essential style, while close attention to detail is evident in the high-quality finish.
Whereas the Monster 797 features the air-cooled Desmodue twin, the rest of the Monster family offers a particularly broad range of power units. The twin-cylinder 821 Testastretta 11° delivers 112 hp @ 9250 rpm and a maximum torque of 89.4 Nm (65.9 lb-ft) @ 7750 rpm. The Testastretta 11° DS on the Monster 1200, instead, comes in two different versions: 150 hp @ 9250 rpm and 126.2 Nm (93.1 lb-ft) @ 7750 rpm on the 1200 and 1200 S version and 160 hp @ 9250 rpm and 131.4 Nm (97 lb-ft) @ 7750 rpm on the R version.
When it comes to the Monster chassis, Ducati uses the most advanced design techniques it has ever developed. On the 821 and 1200, the iconic Trellis frame remains a central design feature, with the attachment points positioned directly on the cylinder heads, a technique already implemented on the Panigale Superbike. The Monster frame is extremely compact. Large-diameter steel tubing ensures a combination of optimal torsional strength and minimal weight. The Monster 797 features a traditional tubular Ducati Trellis frame. Essential, rigid and light, it leaves the Ducati L-twin engine in full view and is, together with the steel tank, a Monster hallmark.
