GOV. RITTER APPOINTS NEW DISTRICT COURT JUDGE

Gov. Bill Ritter announced today he has appointed Scott A. Sells of Woodland Park as a District Court judge in the 4th Judicial District, which serves El Paso and Teller counties.

Sells has been a District Court magistrate in the 4th Judicial District since 1996, with a docket consisting largely of family and juvenile cases. From 1984 to 1996, Sells was a solo practitioner. He received his B.A. from Missouri State University in 1978 and his law degree from Mississippi College Law School in 1984.

The appointment is effective Jan. 5 and will fill a vacancy occasioned by the retirement of the Hon. Steven T. Pelican. The appointment is for a provisional term of two years, and then until the second Tuesday in January following the next general election. Thereafter, if retained by the voters, the term for a district court judge is six years. The current salary for a district court judge is $128,598.
