Gov. Bill Ritter has appointed Charles Michael Hobbs of Fort Morgan as a District Court judge in the 13th Judicial District, which serves Kit Carson, Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington and Yuma counties.
Hobbs has been a municipal court judge for the City of Fort Morgan since January of 2007. Also a sole practitioner, Hobbs specializes in criminal defense, bankruptcy, and general civil litigation. From 1988 to 1993, Hobbs was an associate with Faegre and Benson, before briefly moving to Popham, Haik, Schobrich and Kaufman. Hobbs earned his B.A. from Fort Lewis College in 1981, and his J.D. from theUniversity of Denver in 1988.
Hobbs will fill a vacancy caused by the upcoming retirement of the Hon. J. Curt Perry on Aug. 7. The annual salary for the position is $128,598, and the initial term of office is a provisional term of two years, and then until the second Tuesday in January following the next general election. Thereafter, if retained by the voters, the term for a district court judge is six years.
