On 11 November every year, Latvians light thousands of candles to commemorate the soldiers who fell for the country's independence during the First World War.
Latvia was proclaimed the Independent Republic of Latvia on 18 November 1918 but for a year a war was waged with the West Russian Volunteer Army, a force that was also made up of German volunteers. Latvia claimed final victory on 11 November 1919.
