Just a few days after making its global debut at the Los Angeles auto show, Mazda has kicked off production of its all-new CX-5 compact crossover.
Mazda's Ujina Plant No. 2 near its headquarters in Hiroshima began production of the 2017 CX-5 earlier this week. The 2017 CX-5 will initially go on sale in Japan in February before spreading to other global markets.
The 2017 CX-5 is a followup to the original, which began production in November 2011. The CX-5 competes in a highly competitive segment that includes heavyweights like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.
The 2017 CX-5 features Mazda's latest Kodo "soul of motion" design language, with plenty of cues borrowed from the larger CX-9. Engine choices will include 2.0L and 2.5L gas engines, as well as a 2.2L diesel offering. The 2017 CX-5 ships standard with front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive available as an upgrade.
The 2017 CX-5 is an extremely important vehicle for Mazda, with the crossover now account for about a quarter of the company's annual sales volume.
